IMPORTANT! If your pregnancy is at risk in any way, you should not receive a massage without your doctor’s written consent. Even then it is best for you to see a massage practitioner that has experience in pregnancy massage.
Most of the time massage is indicated for pregnancy and is quite helpful. This is a stressful time for you, both emotionally and physically. It is also great for the baby. Once your stress is released – so too is the baby’s! Generally speaking light circulatory work to release stress is best.
There are many points that are considered ‘NO GO’ points. In general stimulation of specific points is contraindicated for pregnancy. These are the same points used by acupuncture to activate specific channels, and should be used by practitioners who have the knowledge and experience to properly apply them.
It is also contraindicated to massage your abdominal area (Your Baby Bump). However, you and your partner can and should use a light touch technique called effleurage, with a little lotion, to help calm and sooth both you and baby. Your practitioner will be happy to show you how and coach your partner.
While getting comfortable on a flat massage table is challenging while pregnant, the easiest position to get a neutral spine is side-lying while hugging a pillow. Feel free to bring your own body pillow. Also, feel free to reposition yourself during the massage, you need to be relaxed to get the most release out of the massage.
If you would be more comfortable with your partner in the room during the massage, please bring him/her with you. Your practitioner will be able to communicate with both of you and suggest ways they can help you be more comfortable during your pregnancy.
As your body changes, some scents can cause nausea and make you feel sick – even though you may have enjoyed them in the past. Make sure your practitioner uses pure essential oils, and check them out before the massage. To be safe, ask for unscented oils or lotions to be used.
